Be a part of the community that makes Dicken a great place for our children and families.  Read on to find the volunteer opportunity that fits your interests and schedule!  Most of the activities have been done before and have an established hand-off guide and there is lots of support from the PTO and Community.  Many hands make light work!

 *Silent AuctionThe PTO’s largest fundraiser and a fun evening for parents

NEEDED:         One or more Chairs, a Planning Committee and several volunteers to solicit donations
DUTIES:         

  • Plan the annual Dicken Silent Auction, the school’s largest single fundraiser.
  • Secure a venue, purchase catering as appropriate, and seek a large number and variety of items from the community and vendors to auction.
  • Advertise the auction to the Dicken community through multiple means to encourage both contributions of items to auction and event attendance.
  • Committee members work at the auction (seeking additional volunteers to assist, if needed) by preparing programs, ensuring smooth set-up, bidding, payment, etc.
  • Chair(s) work with the PTO Treasurer and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.

WHEN:             Event is in March, with planning beginning several months ahead.

*National Walk to School Day-Celebrate Walking to School, even for Bus Riders who walk from a local park
NEEDED:         Chair and Volunteers
DUTIES:          Coordinate activities for National Walk to School Day in early October, promote the event through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, distribute and collect permission slips, and recruit parent volunteers to help walk bus-riders to school.

DUTIES:         

  • Coordinate the sale of Dicken-themed clothing, advertise the sale through the PTO Blast and/or Dicken Data, and distribute order forms in student backpacks.
  • Collect forms and money and process orders, deliver items classrooms upon arrival.
  • Work with the PTO Treasurer and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.

DUTIES:         
A major fundraiser that will promote healthy lifestyle and activity with all students participating in a walk/run.  Volunteers are needed on the day of the event.

Picture Day-Say Cheese!  Help our students get great pictures

NEEDED:         Volunteers
DUTIES:         
Coordinate picture day by distributing and collecting picture orders and assisting on picture day.  Volunteers walk classes to/from MPR for pictures.
WHEN:             Picture Day is October 2, 2012 and Picture Retakes are October 30, 2012.

Pumpkin Patch-A 5th Grade Fundraiser & Community Event with Costumes, Games and a Haunted House
CHAIR:           Stacie Porter
NEEDED:         Co-Chair-Should be a 5th grade parent or 4th grade parent interested in helping 2 years
Volunteers
DUTIES:         
Chair coordinates the event and gathers items needed for haunted house, games, prizes and food.  Volunteers staff game and food tables.
WHEN:             October 25, 2012 and prior planning.

Box Tops for Education-A Fundraising Program in which the school receives $0.10 for every label collected.  The PTO routinely earns well over $1000 from this simple program.
NEEDED:         1-4 Coordinators
DUTIES:         

  • Coordinate the Box Tops for Education, using the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data to advertise to Dicken families the benefits of collecting them and promoting ways to collect them (e.g. classroom contests)
  • Twice a year, pick up Box Tops from collection boxes at school, sort and group them, and mail to General Mills.
  • Work with General Mills, the PTO Treasurer, and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.

WHEN:             Pick ups from school are in October and February

All-School Thanksgiving Potluck-A Community Building Social Event
CHAIR:           Rob Frazine, Chair rob.frazine AT gmail.com and committee
NEEDED:         3-4 Volunteers
DUTIES:         

  • Coordinate the school-wide Thanksgiving potluck evening event held shortly before the Thanksgiving break, including purchasing supplies or soliciting donations of food, tableware, etc. as necessary. Promote the event through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, set-up and tear-down of event, and request family attendance with suggested food items for potluck.
  • Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.

WHEN:             One evening in November, with planning period prior.

*Super Science Day-An opportunity for students to observe and perform hands-on science experiments
NEEDED:         Chair(s) and at least 20 shift volunteers
DUTIES:         

  • Chair works with Hands-On Museum to select program for Super Science Day, advertise program  and recruit volunteers through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, reserve space for the event, and oversee the event from set-up through tear-down.
  • Shift volunteers demonstrate experiments to small groups of children as classes are brought to the event (training is provided by Hand-On staff).
  • Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.

Science Olympiad –A chance to have fun while learning about science and representing Dicken

NEEDED:         Event Coaches and Volunteers
DUTIES:         

  • Chair serves as Head Coach for Dicken and serves as school representative to WESO (Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad). Chair recruits volunteers to coach different science events at practices beginning in late fall/early Winter in preparation for the competition in Spring 2013.
  • Chair with committee members are responsible for promoting the program through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, maintaining a master roster of participating coaches and students, organizing recognition events/activities for participating students (e.g. a pizza party, ordering t-shirts, etc.), and overseeing scheduling and participation at the WESO tournament.
  • Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.
  • Coaches lead regular practices of various events for 2nd-5th graders to encourage team spirit, instill a love a science, and prepare students for the WESO tournament. Coaches establish practice times, communicate with parents, maintain rosters, choose final tournament participants, and attend the WESO tournament.

WHEN:            Practices begin in late fall/early winter. The WESO tournament is in the spring.

+Teacher Holiday Cookie Exchange-An expression of our appreciation for the Dicken Staff
NEEDED:         Chair and Bakers
DUTIES:          
Schedule a date and reserve a location to fill cookie tins for teachers in December.  Communicate the date to teachers and request that they provide tins.  Volunteers bake and deliver cookies and fill tins with samples of cookies.  Receive much gratitude from teachers!

*Lunch and Lunch Recess Volunteers-
NEEDED:         Volunteers
DUTIES:         
Assist the 3 staff members to oversee lunch and lunch recess activities.  The district has provided only 3 people to supervise approximately 90 K/1; 140 2/3; and 120 4/5 students at lunch and lunch recess.  Parent volunteers during lunch, especially for Kindergarten/1st Grade would be extremely helpful.
WHEN:             As often as you are available, but especially the beginning of the year.

NEEDED:         Co-Chair-Should be a 5th grade parent
DUTIES:         
Coordinate 5th grade fundraisers and activities.  Attend PTO meetings (usually 1st Thursday of the month).  Communicate with 5th grade teachers.
WHEN:             Now until June 2013.

+Community Nights Out-Community Building Fundraiser  
NEEDED:         Coordinator
DUTIES:

  • Organize fun nights out for Dicken families by working with local restaurants and other venues to offer special days where a percentage of proceeds will go to Dicken
  • Advertise the nights out through the PTO email Blasts and/or Dicken Data.
  • Work with participating restaurants/venues, the PTO Treasurer, and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.

WHEN:             Every month or two during the school year

+Reach Out and Read (ROAR)-A Program in which parents and community members read with students
NEEDED:         Coordinator and Readers
DUTIES:         

  • Chair organizes the ROAR program pairing adult reading volunteers from the community to read one-on-one with Dicken students.
  • Volunteer readers read with the same child on a regular schedule; time commitments vary.

WHEN:             Starts in fall and continues throughout the school year.

EGGS (Everybody Goes Grocery Shopping)-A Fundraising Program in which local grocery stores donate a percentage of sales from Dicken Family and Friends Purchases to the PTO
NEEDED:         Coordinator
DUTIES:         

  • Coordinate the EGGS program, making cards for local grocery stores available during school events (e.g. Curriculum Night) and advertise the program through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data
  • Place and deliver card orders as needed
  • Work with stores, the PTO Treasurer, and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds

WHEN:                        As needed throughout the school year

TerraCycle-Recycling Program that keeps a portion of Dicken’s lunchtime waste stream out of a landfill
CHAIR:           Jennifer Streeter and Bethany Williston
NEEDED:         4-5 Volunteers
DUTIES:         

  • With the help of a Dicken Staff Member, supervise students in sorting, counting and bundling Frito-Lay Snack Bags and Capri-Sun Juice Pouches that are collected in separate containers in the lunchroom.
  • These items are returned to the respective companies for creative reuse as new items.

WHEN:             1 day/month(day to be determined)at lunchtime recess for approximately 30-40 minutes.

Noontime Enrichment-A Chance for you to share your talents and hobbies with Dicken Students
CHAIR:           Bethany Williston and Jennifer Streeter
NEEDED:         Volunteers
WHAT:           
Lead activities for lunchtime enrichment once a week, at your time discretion. Bring your hobbies to the children during the lunch time hours and broaden their minds.  This was a very successful program last year with yoga, math games, reading, chess and recess reporters with many more suggested!
WHEN:             Once a week for 6 weeks- during Lunchtime (11:50-12:50)

Gardening-Keeping our School looking good and teaching our students about growing food
CHAIR:           Michelle Loewe
DUTIES:         
Chair/committee oversees the Dicken gardens, ensuring upkeep as needed throughout school year. Teach students the importance of gardens and help them plant and harvest fruits and vegetables in the Community Garden.  Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.
WHEN:             Fall and Spring

Hospitality and Baking-Providing Food for Special Events throughout the year

NEEDED:         Several Volunteers
DUTIES:         Provide food (purchased and homemade), baked goods, drinks, and donations of tableware for school events such as the Family Picnic, Thanksgiving Potluck, Kindergarten Round-Up, and Teacher Appreciation Lunch.
WHEN:             As needed throughout the year.  Volunteers are not committed to every event, but help as available.

PTO Thrift Shop-Representative to the resale shop that benefits the schools in the District
CHAIR:           Susan Farrell, Chair  farrellso AT comcast.net
NEEDED:         Chair-in-Training to take over for next year.
DUTIES:         
Serve as the school representative and promote the PTO Thrift Shop through PTO email Blasts and/or Dicken Data, serve as a liaison between the Dicken PTO and the Thrift Shop, attend Thrift Shop board meetings, including three per year when fundraising checks are distributed.

  • May organize fundraising events in conjunction with the Thrift Shop, such as donation drives, various promotions to shop in the Thrift Shop, and other events.
  • Chair works with the PTO Treasurer and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.

WHEN:             Chair serves as the PTO representative throughout the year as needed; committee helps during special events such as the Donation Drive in April.

Yearbook-Giving the Students a momento of their happy times at Dicken
NEEDED:         Chair
DUTIES:         
Take and collect pictures for yearbook and assist with organizing yearbook production.
WHEN:             Photos to be taken for yearbook throughout the year.

Used Book Sale-A Reading Month Event that makes inexpensive books available to students and families

NEEDED:         7-8 Volunteers
DUTIES:

  • Chair to coordinate the annual Used Book Sale as part of Reading Month and advertise through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data.  Solicit and collect used books from Dicken families. Set space up for sale (usually the Art Room) for one full day in March.
  • Chair and committee members staff sale during school day for teachers and students as well as parents (evening hours also possible).
  • Following the sale, box remaining books for return either to Dicken for book giveaway, or for pick-up by Books by Chance.
  • Chair works with the PTO Treasurer and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.

WHEN:             Sale is one day in March, with collection/set-up prior.

+Reading Month Activities and Family Reading Night-Celebrate Reading andLiteracy

Community of Cultures DayA Celebration of the many Cultures that are a part of our Community

DUTIES:         

  • Coordinate Community of Cultures Day, determine activities for the day (and any activities for classrooms leading up to the day), promote the event through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, secure volunteers if needed to help, reserve space, and oversee any set-up and tear-down of event.
  • Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.

Original Art Works-Art Program Fundraiser of products featuring work created by students in art classes

Disability Workshop-A District program that helps 4th graders become more aware of the challenges of many different disabilities

NEEDED:         Volunteers to set up, oversee, and clean up stations.
DUTIES:          Coordinate the Disability Awareness Workshop, promote the program through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, recruite volunteers to help with the workshop, reserve space as needed, and overseeing the workshop from set-up to tear down.  The School District provides the program and equipment.
WHEN:             March or April

Teacher Appreciation Week-Help students express their gratitude for the hard work of our staff
NEEDED:         Chair and Committee
DUTIES:          Work with room parents to select and coordinate activities celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week in May. Coordinate a lunch for teaching staff with the PTO Hospitality Chair, usually held the Friday of that week.
Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.
WHEN:             Early May.

Ice Cream Social-A fun community event to celebrate the end of the school year

DUTIES:         

  • Organize the annual Ice Cream Social, promote the event through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data and recruiting volunteers to staff stations or provide donations of items needed for the event.
  • Purchase items and food as necessary, arrange for entertainment as appropriate, and oversee set-up and tear down of event. Coordinate distribution of tickets.  Volunteers staff food and game tables and donate cakes for Cake Walk.
  • Work with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.

Field Day-A day for students to get active outdoors and have lots of fun
