FUNDRAISERS

Community Nights Out
WHO: One Coordinator
WHAT:
• Organizes fun nights out for Dicken families by working with local restaurants and other venues to offer special days where a percentage of proceeds will go to Dicken
• Advertises the nights out through the PTO email Blasts and/or Dicken Data.
• Works with participating restaurants/venues, the PTO Treasurer, and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.
WHEN: Every month or two during the school year

TerraCycle
WHO: Two Co-Coordinators
WHAT:
• Coordinate school-wide collection and recycling of TerraCycle drink and snack packs
• Advertises benefits to Dicken of recycling through the PTO email Blasts and/or Dicken Data
• Send in recycled materials and work with the PTO Treasurer, and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds
WHEN: As needed throughout the school year

EGGS (Everybody Goes Grocery Shopping)
WHO: One Coordinator
WHAT:
• Coordinates the EGGS program, making cards for local grocery stores available during school events (e.g. Curriculum Night) and advertising the program through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data
• Places and delivers card orders as needed
• Works with stores, the PTO Treasurer, and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds
WHEN:As needed throughout the school year

ShopWithScrip.com
WHO: One Coordinator
WHAT:
• Coordinates the ShopWithScrip.com online gift card program, advertising the program through the PTO email Blast and Dicken Data
• Tracks, orders, and delivers gift card orders as needed (usually every 1-2 months)
• Works with Scrip, the PTO Treasurer, and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds
WHEN: As needed throughout the school year, with orders delivered every 1-2 months

Box Tops/Soup Labels
WHO: One Coordinator
WHAT:
• Coordinates the Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soup Label program, using the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data to advertise the benefits of collecting them to Dicken families and promoting ways to collect them (e.g. classroom contests)
• As necessary, picks up Box Tops and Labels from collection boxes at school, sorts and groups them, and mails to General Mills/Campbell.
• Works with General Mills/Campbell, the PTO Treasurer, and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.
WHEN: As needed throughout the school year

Silent Auction
WHO: Chair and one or more Co-Chairs, plus a Committee
WHAT:
• Plan the annual Dicken Silent Auction, the school’s largest single fundraiser.
• Secure a venue, purchase catering as appropriate, and seek a large number and variety of items from the community and vendors to auction.
• Advertise the auction to the Dicken community through multiple means to encourage both contributions of items to auction and event attendance.
• Committee members work at the auction (seeking additional volunteers to assist, if needed) by preparing programs, ensuring smooth set-up, bidding, payment, etc.
• Chair(s) work with the PTO Treasurer and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.
WHEN: Event is in March, with planning beginning several months ahead.

Dicken Spiritwear
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Coordinate the sale of Dicken-themed clothing, advertising the sale through the PTO Blast and/or Dicken Data, and distributing order forms in student backpacks.
• Collect forms and money and process orders, delivering to students/families upon arrival.
• Chair works with the PTO Treasurer and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.
WHEN:September/October

Holiday Gift Sale
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Coordinate the sale of holiday gift wrap and other holiday items, advertising through the PTO Blast and/or Dicken Data, and distributing order forms in student backpacks.
• Collect forms and money and process orders, delivering to students/families upon arrival.
• Chair works with the PTO Treasurer and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.
WHEN: October/November

Original Art Works
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Coordinate the sale of products based on art work created by students in art classes, advertising through the PTO Blast and/or Dicken Data, and distributing order forms in student backpacks.
• Collect forms and money and process orders, delivering to students/families upon arrival.
• Chair works with the PTO Treasurer and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.
WHEN: April

Used Book Sale
WHO: Chair and a committee
WHAT:
• Coordinate the annual Used Book Sale as part of Reading Month and advertise through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data. Solicit and collect used books from Dicken families. Set space up for sale (usually the Art Room) for one full day in March.
• Chair and committee members staff sale during school day for teachers and students as well as parents (evening hours also possible).
• Following the sale, box remaining books for return either to Dicken for book giveaway, or for pick-up by Books by Chance.
• Chairs works with the PTO Treasurer and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.
WHEN: Sale is one day in March, with collection/set-up prior.

New Book Sale
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Coordinate the annual New Book Sale and advertise through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data. Using materials provided by Scholastic, set up space for sale for one full day and evening in November (usually in conjunction with another evening event such as the Thanksgiving Potluck)
• Chair and committee members staff sale during school day for teachers and students as well as parents throughout sale, including evening hours.
• Following the sale, box remaining materials for return to Scholastic.
• Chair works with Scholastic, the PTO Treasurer, and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.
WHEN: Sale is one day/evening in November, with some planning and set-up prior.

PTO Thrift Shop
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Chair serves as the school representative and promotes the PTO Thrift Shop through PTO email Blasts and/or Dicken Data, serves as a liaison between the Dicken PTO and the Thrift Shop, attends Thrift Shop board meetings, including three per year when fundraising checks are distributed.
• Chair and committee organize fundraising events in conjunction with the Thrift Shop, such as donation drives, various promotions to shop in the Thrift Shop, and other events.
• Chair works with the PTO Treasurer and the PTO Fundraising Chair to receive and process funds.
WHEN:Chair serves as the PTO representative throughout the year as needed; committee helps during special events such as the Donation Drive in April.

SCHOOL EVENTS

Hospitality and Baking
WHO: Committee (reports to the PTO Hospitality Chair)
WHAT:
• Volunteers needed to provide food (purchased and homemade), baked goods, drinks, and donations of tableware for school events such as the Family Picnic, Thanksgiving Potluck, Kindergarten Round-Up, and Teacher Appreciation Lunch.
WHEN: As needed throughout the school year.

Reach Out and Read (ROAR)
WHO: Chair, Committee, and Readers
WHAT:
• Chair organizes the ROAR program pairing adult reading volunteers from the community to read one-on-one with Dicken students.
• Volunteer readers read with the same child on a regular schedule; time commitments vary.
WHEN: Starts in fall and continues throughout the school year.

All-School Thanksgiving Potluck
WHO: Chair and committee
WHAT:
• Coordinates the school-wide Thanksgiving potluck evening event held shortly before the Thanksgiving break, including purchasing supplies or soliciting donations of food, tableware, etc. as necessary, promoting the event through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, set-up and tear-down of event, and requesting family attendance with suggested food items for potluck.
• Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.
WHEN: One evening in November, with planning period prior.

Picture Day/Yearbook
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Coordinate picture day by distributing and collecting picture orders and assisting on picture day.
• Take and collect pictures for yearbook and assist with organizing yearbook production.
WHEN: Picture Day is one day in September; photos to be taken for yearbook throughout the year.

Super Science Day
WHO: Chair(s) and at least 20 shift volunteers
WHAT:
• Chair works with Hands-On Museum to select program for Super Science Day in January, advertise program and recruit volunteers through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, reserve space for the event, and oversee the event from set-up through tear-down.
• Shift volunteers demonstrate experiments to small groups of children as classes are brought to the event (training is provided by Hand-On staff).
• Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.
WHEN: January

NAAPID (National African-American Parent Involvement Day)
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Organizes all events connected with NAAPID, including: promoting program to families through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data; securing speaker/performers; reserving space; organizing a NAAPID lunch; coordinating any other special activities/materials for the day as needed; and overseeing set-up and tear-down of events. Chair will also work with PTO Hospitality Chair to organize a NAAPID breakfast.
• Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.
WHEN: One day in February, with some planning prior.

Community of Cultures Day
WHO: Chair(s) and Committee
WHAT:
• Coordinates Community of Cultures Day, determining activities for the day (and any activities for classrooms leading up to the day), promoting the event through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, securing volunteers if needed to help, reserving space, and overseeing any set-up and tear-down of event.
• Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.
WHEN: One day in April, with planning prior.

Reading Month
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Chair and committee work with staff and teachers to select and organize events centered on Reading Month, promoting activities through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, reserving space as needed, securing speakers/performers if desired, and overseeing set-up and tear-down of event.
• Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.
WHEN: March

Science Olympiad
WHO: Chair(s), Committee, and Coaches
WHAT:
• Chair serves as Head Coach for Dicken and serves as school representative to WESO (Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad). Chair recruits volunteers to coach different science events at practices beginning in late winter in preparation for the competition in late May/early June.
• Chair with committee members are responsible for promoting the program through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, maintaining a master roster of participating coaches and students, organizing recognition events/activities for participating students (e.g. a pizza party, ordering t-shirts, etc.), and overseeing scheduling and participation at the WESO tournament.
• Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.
• Coaches lead regular practices of various events for 2nd-5th graders to encourage team spirit, instill a love a science, and prepare students for the WESO tournament. Coaches are responsible for reserving space for practices, communicating with parents, maintaining rosters, choosing final tournament participants, and attending the WESO tournament.
WHEN: Practices begin in late winter. The WESO tournament is in late May or early June.

Teacher Appreciation Week
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Chair (with committee) works with room parents to select and coordinate activities celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week in May. Chair and committee, working with the PTO Hospitality Chair, also coordinate a lunch for teaching staff, usually held the Friday of that week.
• Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.

Disability Workshop
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Coordinates the Disability Awareness Workshop, promoting the program through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, recruiting volunteers to help with the workshop, reserving space as needed, and overseeing the workshop from set-up to tear down.
WHEN: February

Ice Cream Social
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Organizes the annual Ice Cream Social, promoting the event through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data and recruiting volunteers to staff stations or provide donations of items needed for the event.
• Chair with committee purchase items and food as necessary, arrange for entertainment as appropriate, and oversee set-up and tear down of event. Chair and committee also coordinate distribution of tickets.
• Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.

Field Day
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Chair and committee works with teachers to provide volunteer and other support for outdoor events for Field Day.

Gardening
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Chair/committee oversees the Dicken gardens, ensuring upkeep as needed throughout school year. Chair works with the PTO Treasurer to process receipts.

National Walk to School Day Group
WHO: Chair and Committee
WHAT:
• Coordinate activities for National Walk to School Day in early October, promoting the event through the PTO email Blast and/or Dicken Data, distributing and collecting permission slips, and recruiting parent volunteers to help walk bus-riders to school.
